Distribution maps

These distribution maps should have opened in a separate window, so that you can look at them in conjunction with the species information.

Pipistrelle Brown Long-eared Noctule
Natterer's Daubenton's

This page includes distribution maps and accounts of each of the North Yorkshire bat species. These maps are only as complete as our database allows and we rely entirely on bat workers and naturalists sending in their records. To make future editions a more accurate reflection of the status of the county's bats please ensure that you send all your records in regularly.

The maps, as presented, include all the data we hold whether relating to maternity roosts, hibernacula, bats in flight or grounded bats. Each record we hold varies in the amount of detail recorded, but we are reasonably confident in the majority of cases that the information is as accurate as possible. In future analyses we may look in more detail at the types of records held and we constantly review and check existing records for their validity. Bat detector records are included where the species can be identified from this method and where we believe the observer to be sufficiently experienced.

The maps are presented on a tetrad (2x2 km) basis for clarity at this scale. Solid dots represent a record in the past five years while open dots are pre-1995 records. The dotted lines are the local district council boundaries. Where data is held on bats outside the county, but within the overall area covered by the maps, these are included, but in no way should they be taken to represent the status of the species in these adjoining counties.
